Data Speaks in MICROBLUE: Our Students Bring Science and Statistics Together!

As part of our school's MICROBLUE Project, the microplastic awareness survey was transformed into statistical data under the guidance of our Mathematics Teacher, Nurhak Beyaz. Through this activity, our students gained valuable experience in examining environmental issues through scientific data.

At Mahmut Celaleddin Ökten Anadolu İmam Hatip High School, we have added another interdisciplinary learning activity to our MICROBLUE – Small Particles. Big Impact. One Mediterranean. project.

The results of our survey, conducted to assess students' knowledge and awareness of microplastic pollution in the Mediterranean Sea, were organised and converted into statistical data under the guidance of our Mathematics Teacher, Nurhak Beyaz.

From Survey Results to Meaningful Data

During the activity, our students learned how responses collected through surveys are organised, classified and transformed into numerical data.

They also explored how statistical data can be interpreted and visualised using different types of graphs and charts. By discovering how graphs make complex information easier to understand, students had the opportunity to see how mathematics is applied in everyday life and scientific research.

Bringing Mathematics and Environmental Science Together

In line with the interdisciplinary approach of the MICROBLUE Project, this activity demonstrated how mathematical knowledge and skills can be used to investigate environmental challenges.

By examining data obtained from microplastic awareness activities, our students had the opportunity to develop their data literacy, analytical thinking, graph interpretation and scientific reasoning skills.

Through MICROBLUE, we aim not only to increase our students' awareness of environmental issues but also to encourage them to become individuals who investigate problems, question data and evaluate evidence using scientific methods.
