A Big Step for the Future of the Mediterranean: Our MICROBLUE Project Begins!
SMALL PARTICLES, BIG IMPACTS! Students at Mahmud Celaleddin Ökten Anatolian İmam Hatip High School in Antalya are taking action to explore the hidden threat of microplastic pollution and help protect the future of the Mediterranean Sea.
Inspired by Antalya's beautiful coastline and rich marine environment, our school is launching MICROBLUE – Small Particles. Big Impact. One Mediterranean., an interdisciplinary education and awareness project focused on marine conservation and ocean literacy.
Developed in line with the objectives of the Network of European Blue Schools, MICROBLUE aims to help students understand the causes and consequences of microplastic pollution, investigate environmental challenges through scientific inquiry, and become active contributors to a more sustainable future.
Making the Invisible Visible
The Mediterranean Sea is home to remarkable biodiversity, yet its ecosystems face increasing pressure from plastic pollution.
Microplastics are tiny plastic particles that can be found in seawater, coastal sediments and marine environments. Although many are difficult to see with the naked eye, their presence raises important environmental questions.
Through MICROBLUE, our students will investigate where microplastics come from, how they move through marine environments and why reducing plastic pollution matters.
From Classrooms to Scientific Exploration
The project brings together Biology, Mathematics, Geography, English, Religious Culture and Ethics, and Physical Education and Sports, creating opportunities for students to explore marine pollution from different perspectives.
Planned activities include student research, environmental awareness surveys, data analysis, scientific observations, educational visits, and the creation of English-language posters and awareness materials.
We also aim to collaborate with university specialists and relevant local institutions to connect classroom learning with real-world scientific and environmental practices.
Throughout the project, students will strengthen their research, critical thinking, teamwork, data literacy and communication skills while developing a deeper sense of environmental responsibility.
A Local Initiative with a European Vision
MICROBLUE connects a challenge affecting our local Mediterranean environment with the wider goals of European ocean literacy education.
Inspired by the Network of European Blue Schools, an initiative within the European Commission's EU4Ocean framework, our school aims to develop meaningful student-led activities and apply to join the network.
By sharing our learning journey, research activities and student-created materials, we hope to inspire greater awareness of marine conservation within our school community and beyond.
Small Particles. Big Impact. One Mediterranean.
We believe that protecting the Mediterranean begins with knowledge, awareness and collective action.
Through MICROBLUE, our students will discover that even small choices can contribute to meaningful environmental change.
Together, we can learn more, act responsibly and help build a cleaner future for our seas.

Small Particles. Big Impact. One Mediterranean.
Our Mediterranean. Our Responsibility. Our Future.
